Facts About Hypothermia in Puget Sound
  • Hypothermia results when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it.
  • Puget Sound water temperature ranges between 45° and 55° year round.
  • The body cools up to 25 times faster in water than in air.
  • If you fall into cold water on a hot day, the “gasp reflex” can cause instant drowning.  This is often called Sudden Drowning Syndrome.
  • Hypothermia sets in within 10 minutes of immersion in local waters.
  • Immersed persons are usually too weak to help themselves after 30 minutes in the water.
  • The chances of survival are slim after an hour in the water.
  • Life jackets help protect you from hypothermia, as well as increase your chances of survival.
