We’ve been following the Washington Mandatory Boater Education program, which has prompted us to check in with the folks at the Oregon State Marine Board. As of January 1, 2007, Oregon boaters 60 and younger must now carry a boater education card when operating powerboats (including personal watercraft or any motorized watercraft) greater than 10 horsepower. Law enforcement officers are issuing citations for non-compliance with the Mandatory Education Law. The citation fines are $97. Youths 12 to 15 also need a boater education card when operating boats 0 to 10 horsepower alone. When operating a motorboat over 10 horsepower, a card-holding adult (16 or older, 18 for personal watercraft) must be in direct supervision (on board and able to immediately take corrective action in case of emergency). There are many different options available to help you meet the requirements of the law. For all the information and for course availability on the boater education program that has become a model for other states, including Washington, visit www.osmb.state.or.us. |
