Four local sailors vied in October for one of sailing’s greatest honors—a win at the United States Olympic Trials and a shot at a medal. Only the top finisher in each of 13 men’s and women’s classes will go to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

Dalton Bergan, of the Seattle Yacht Club, and crew Zack Maxam came the closest with a silver-medal finish in the 49er fleet trials at Southwestern Yacht Club in San Diego, Calif. In the 42-boat Finn fleet, Darrell Peck, of the Vancouver Lake Sailing Club, placed third, and Mike Visser, of the Olympia Yacht Club, South Sound Sailing Society and Sailing Anarchy Yacht Club, placed 16th at the trials, which were held at Newport Harbor Yacht Club in Balboa, Calif. Seattle Yacht Club members Emery Wager and Derick Vranizan III both made the Laser fleet’s top ten at the Rhode Island Sailing Foundation in Newport.
